52.5. Appendix - SNMP Protocol

The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) allows the exchange of configuration information, statistics, alarms, etc., between suitable devices for network supervision, called SNMP Managers, and processes called SNMP Agent, running aboard the devices to be controlled. The protocol also allows the Agent processes to send unsolicited messages, called Traps, to the Manager ones for pointing out particular events such as alarms, exceptions, etc.
